Murder arrest over torso found in woodland

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a torso was found in secluded woodland.

The remains of a man who was "likely to be aged older than 40" were found wrapped in plastic by a passer-by in Kersal Wetlands, Salford, on Thursday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Specialists have been carrying out DNA tests to identify the victim.

A GMP representative said a man in his 20s and from Salford had been arrested and remained in custody.

Forensic officers and police divers have continued to work at the location of the find.

On Saturday, the force said the victim had "only been deceased for a matter of days".

Ch Supt Tony Creely said tests had shown the victim was "a man who could not have survived".

"At the heart of our investigation is this man and his family," he added.

"We are using all forensic techniques available to identify him as soon as we can so we are able to support his loved ones during this devastating time."
