Mr Assange's lawyers say he faces up to 175 years in US prison, if convicted

Julian Assange must wait to find out if his final UK appeal against his US extradition can go ahead.

The High Court said he would be allowed to appeal unless assurances were given by the United States.

US authorities say the Wikileaks founder broke the law and endangered lives by publishing secret military files.

In a February hearing, his lawyers argued that the case against him was a form of "state retaliation".

In a High Court ruling on Tuesday, Dame Victoria Sharp said that before making a final decision on the application for leave to appeal, the US government would be given an opportunity to give assurances.

"If assurances are not given then we will grant leave to appeal without a further hearing," she said.

"If assurances are given then we will give the parties an opportunity to make further submissions before we make a final decision on the application for leave to appeal."
